PASTORAL CARE

The last half of the twentieth century has seen an increased interest in and acceptance of pastoral caregivers in various medical settings. These changes have coincided with an increased emphasis on psycho-social and spiritual issues by healthcare providers. However, the area of spirituality has largely been left to the "chaplain," with health providers unsure about their part in this area of patients' lives.

The Computer Assisted Instructional System: This system is designed for professional healthcare providers in addition to students currently in pre-professional programs. The course content will address the continuing education needs of allied health professionals, but will also prove useful to students at the undergraduate or graduate levels of other professional health programs. This program will offer basic, general information concerning pastoral care. This information will include a definition of pastoral care, along with definitions of key terms. There will also be an overview of the establishment and development of the field. Since pastoral care is based on a spiritual foundation, there will be a discussion of the biblical and theological basis of this discipline, including inter-faith perspectives. Also, there will be an introduction of current research directions to include the role of spirituality in overall health-mental & physical health (integrating current literature in the field of Psychology, Theology, Spirituality). The remainder of the lesson topics will address various issues related to the practice of pastoral care to include: Cross-Cultural and International Implications; Professional Issues/Role of Professional Societies; Ethical Issues; Art & Science of Pastoral Care; and there will be a section on Taking Care of the Caregiver. Production scheduled for 2009.

SPIRITUAL ASSESSMENT

In the 2005 manual for hospitals, the Joint Commission of the Accreditation of Health Care Organization (JACHO) now includes requirements about spirituality care. The American Nurses' Association (2005) has published similar documents. The NANDA manuals cite spiritual distress as an accepted nursing diagnosis. While spirituality is no stranger to nurses generally, to incorporate a spiritual assessment and history into the usual nursing care plans or matrix may be an uncommon task for many nurses.

The purpose of this computer assisted program (CAI) on Spiritual Assessment is to provide an educational tool to assist nursing staff in meeting the accreditation requirements of the Joint Commission of the Accreditation of Health Care Organization. After completing this CAI, Registered Nurse staff, along with other Health Care Providers and Chaplains, will be able to establish an informed forum in which they may develop a plan for the spiritual assessment and care of patients/clients within their specific service, agency, or private practice.

Focusing on the holistic systems of the body, mind, and spirit, this CAI embodies a new and broader way of thinking about health, illness, and healing. Human spirituality is defined as a continuum, extending from the person who does not recognize spirituality as a dimension of his/her being, to the individual who is very spiritual. The manner in which the individual may practice his/her spirituality varies accordingly. An archetypical, research-based, and ethical spiritual nursing care plan is presented to serve as a guide for spiritual assessment, diagnosis of spiritual distress, stress buffering interventions, and expected outcomes.

Physical Characteristics of the Program. The program will be on a CD and consist of ten lessons. Accompanying the CAI program will be an instructor's manual and a participants' manual of additional information and references. Case situations are included for analysis. A computerized testing program, “Qest & Test,” will be available to verify individuals' learning and to facilitate documentation for J.A.C.H.O. accreditation.

The content of this CAI is currently being offered as a workshop by the author .
