Statistics is viewed by many students as a complex mystery that presents great challenge. The STATPRIM Computer Assisted Instruction (C.A.I.) System addresses this problem by distilling and simplifying the information presented. Utilizing the computer. the student will become comfortable with the terminology, acquire knowledge, and gain confidence by correctly answering questions incorporated in each lesson. This CAI consists of six conceptual lessons and five calculation lessons. Documentation includes a STATPRIM Computer Tutor Handbook for the students, and a departmental users guide containing rationale and suggested use statements.

The Statprim CAI presents explanations of materials commonly presented in introductory statistics classes. Students like the material because of the portability, their preference for utilizing the computer, and the presentation that is in a language they understand.

The calculation lessons explain common statistical tests: many that will not be covered in class, but all of these appear in various disciplines in research journals. This not only adds to the course, but also to the students' general understanding. This system further teaches the solution steps for statistics commonly used in discipline research.

TARGET LEARNERS: Students enrolled in baccalaureate programs or as a remediation tool for students changing disciplines or returning after an absence to a health sciences program. Additional usage: in-service, distance, continuing education.
